Ch21 Tense2
It was unreal.
If anyone had told me that would happen I would have told them they were crazy.
I was still stunned in the car as Kai drove me out of the estate.
“Where can I take you?” Kai asked softly.
I hated the sympathy in his eyes. He was not a friend, he worked for Mack. And he was not a friend of mine.
“Um…” I didn’t know where to go. I was lost, unanchored.
Connor. The last thing I needed was to have to explain to my brother what had happened.
Kai’s eyes met mine in the rearview mirror.
Jordan. Slater. I wasn’t sure how I could tell anyone what had just transpired.
“Just take me…home.”
But the home I had shared with Sin, would not feel like a home without him. He was my home, he was were I felt safe and sheltered.
Kai nodded.
The silence stretched on in the car but my mind was loud and overwhelming with questions, scenarios and fear. And despite being able to understand Sin’s actions I couldn’t wipe the pain it had inflicted. Marrying someone else.
He was mine. Mine to marry and the father of my baby.
Would he really go to those lengths to keep us safe? Would he truly marry someone else when he was in love with me?
I didn’t know what to think or how to handle any of this. It felt like my entire life had been up ended for the second time and I didn’t know how to put things back together. The truth was I didn’t know if there was anything I could do but wait by the side lines.
My stomach rolled and I put my hand to it to ease the discomfort. I had been under so much stress and I was physically feeling weak. My sensitive emotions were all over the place.
It felt wrong to leave Sin behind with Mack and Sienna. He hadn’t even been able to look me in the eye when Mack and asked Kai to take me wherever I wanted. As I had stood, my legs shaking, I had tried my best to walk out of there with dignity.
I got why he was going to such drastic lengths but it hurt. Feeling emotional I wanted to cry but couldn’t. Kai kept studying me as he drove me back to the house I shared with Sin.
It felt like the longest ride of my life before the car stopped and I saw the house I shared with Sin.
Kai opened the passenger door for me and I got out.
I took a scratchy breath trying to get myself together. I was about to walk down the path to the front door when Kai reached out to stop me with a hand to my arm.
“He made the right choice.”
I turned to face Kai, trying to take his words in. “I’m not sure my bruised heart would agree.” I couldn’t help lashing out at him. Besides who was he to say something like that. He worked for the guy who had put Sin in that position.
“The further away you are from Mack, the better.”
I frowned. “Why would you that? You work for him.” I felt compelled to remind him.
He shrugged.
I searched his features but I couldn’t read anything his eyes. Feeling tired and strung out I swung from him and stormed to the door.
Before I unlocked the door I looked back to see Kai watching me from the car.
Once inside, I went to the window and drew the curtain back slightly to watch Kai into the car and pull away.
I let out a deep emotional sigh. What did I do now? Doing nothing wasn’t an option. It was dark but I felt safer here than I had in Mack’s company.
I got my phone and left the house. It was a short walk to Slater and Jordan’s place. I was relieved the lights were on, they were home.
Feeling apprehensive and unsure of how I was going to explain what had just happened. It was crazy.
I knocked on the door and waited. It only took moments before the door swung open. Slater’s expression surprised.
“I…” I couldn’t seem to form a sentence. Feeling tearful, I swallowed. I had been through such an ordeal, the constant fear and now I was under a different kind of a pressure. The fear worse, that I was going to lose Sin.
He reached for me and pulled me inside before shutting the door.
“Are you okay?” He was already checking me over.
I nodded, unable to talk as I swallowed my tears.
“Ah Taylor,” he murmured as he hugged me. “We’ve been so worried.”
I nodded against his chest.
“Taylor?” Jordan’s voice pulled my attention from the man giving me comfort.
I pulled from Slater.
“What happened?” she asked as she came closer.
I took a shuddering breath. How did I explain the craziness I had experienced for the last few days?
“Where’s Sin Taylor?” Slater asked.
“Mack,” was all I managed to get out.
“Come sit down,” Jordan instructed putting her arm around my shoulders and steering me to the sofa.
I sank down, trembling inside. The emotions I had kept a tight control over the past few days were all coming to the surface at once. Wetness dropped from my face and I sniffled.
“Here,” Jordan handed me a tissue as she sat down by me.
I took it from her and wiped my cheeks.
“Here,” Slater handed me a glass with what looked like water. “It will help with shock.”
I frowned as I tasted the sugar in the liquid but gulped a few sips, trying to calm myself.
Slater lowered himself to his hunches to line his gaze with mine. “I need you to tell me where Sin is?”
“He is…with…Mack.” The tears wouldn’t stop. The lid had been lifted and there was no smothering what I was feeling.
“What happened Taylor?” he questioned, his eyes softened.
“He is a bad man Slater,” I whispered.
Slater nodded his head. “Yeah, I know.” He soothed.
“Did he do something to Sin?” he asked, carefully.
I gulped a breath.
“Give her a minute Slater,” Jordan instructed. “It’s okay.” She soothed, hugging me to her.
I had to a grip on myself, I was in a blubbering emotional meltdown. This would not help Sin. I needed to get my shit together so I could tell Slater what had happened. We had to find a way to stop Mack. We just had to. I couldn’t think of a scenario where Sin would marry someone else.
My heart cracked a little.
“Take a deep breath,” Slater coaxed and I nodded trying my best to calm myself down.“Tell me what happened Taylor.”
“Where do I start…?” Would any of it make any sense?
Slater nodded. “From the start.”
I tried my best to tell him everything. The only thing I didn’t mention was the fact that I was pregnant. This was about Sin, baby news could wait until later.
I tried to relay what had happened from the time I had tailed Sin to the motel room. I tried to relay every detail I thought would be important.
“Mack wants Sin to marry Sienna. He promised to leave me alone if Sin agreed to marry his sister.” I gave a deep emotional breath, my heart still hurt so much.
Slater nodded, clearly not as surprised as I expected.
“That’s crazy,” Jordan exclaimed, giving the type of response I had expected.
“Right?” I murmured, still watching Slater’s expression.
Slater stood and rubbed his chin thoughtfully. “So Mack just let you go?”
I nodded. “Yes.”
“Do you know when the wedding is?”
I shook my head. I had no idea when any of this was going to take place. For all I knew it could be happening tomorrow before we could come up with a way to stop it. I fidgeted, trying to stop myself from getting worked up again.
I had to keep calm, getting upset would help no one. Sin wasn’t the only one I was thinking about, I was thinking about the baby we had created together before all this had happened.
“How do we stop him Slater?” I finally asked the burning question, unable to be any more patient.
I had to know that he had a plan, because if he didn’t we would not be able to stop Mack.
Slater rubbed the back of his neck but he refused to face me.
“Slater?” I prompted. I needed the truth, even if it wasn’t something I wanted to hear.
