M Ch7 Danger
There was nothing I could do except watch with a horror as the car neared. The driver had slammed on the brakes but the car continued to skid toward me. It was too late, it would not stop in time.
There was a flash of blinding light and I flew backward. Something solid pushed me out of the way. The screeching of the tires, pierced my scream.
I landed with a thud on the ground, winding me.
The light was so blinding I couldn’t see much. I closed my eyes tightly, groaning as the pain jolted through my body.
This time I opened my eyes Damien’s face was above mine. His body above mine but he wasn’t touching me, I couldn’t feel him. His usual darkness amplified by the light behind him.
“Damien,” I whispered, trying to get my bearings while by trying to catch my breath back. My body ached.
The light disappeared. Then Damien stood beside me, in an instant. I wondered if I had banged my head hard enough to be seeing things. Because what I believed I had witnessed couldn’t be possible.
“Are you okay?” A man appeared beside me. “I didn’t see you. The road was clear and then…” He as clearly shocked at what had just happened.
But my attention wasn’t on the driver it remained on Damien who was staring at me. What had happened? My mind was still trying to figure out how I had gotten from where I had been standing in the street to the grass on the other side of the street. What happened wasn’t possible? There was no way I could have done that, so who had saved me?
The pain in the back of my head intensified and I put my hand to it.
“There was a bright light…” Even the babbling man who was trying to check if I was okay couldn’t explain what had happened.
The man helped me sit up. “Should I call an ambulance?”
I shook my head. It was the last thing I needed, I didn’t want to draw any attention to what had just happened. I just wanted to go home and figure out what had unfolded.
“Can I at least give you a lift home?” The man offered.
I nodded.
He helped me into the car slowly. Damien appeared in the back seat. He couldn’t look at me directly. There was something going on and I was determined to get to the bottom of it. No more excuses. I wanted the truth.
By the time the stranger dropped me off I had a splitting head ache and my back hurt. I went straight to the kitchen and swallowed some painkillers.
Damien stood in the corner watching me.
“What happened Damien?” I asked, convinced he wouldn’t tell me the truth.
There was silence. I turned to face him.
“That’s twice I’ve nearly died and then miraculous survived.” I studied him, looking for any sign of what I suspected.
He scowled at me.
“How did that happen Damien?” I folded my arms across my chest.
There was only one explanation and I wanted him to admit it to me.
His lip curled as he glared at me. “I hate you.”
I swallowed, feeling hurt by his statement. “I hate you more.”
His eyes glowed red. “That’s not possible.”
“Are you going to tell me what happened Damien?” My question was direct.
He pressed his lips together and I knew he wasn’t going to answer me.
How on earth did I get him to admit what I already knew? I had to know why and this wasn’t working. He was just stone walling me and I was not closer to the truth.
Simply asking him wasn’t working, if I was ever going to get to the bottom on this I would have to do something drastic. But what?
“If you’re not going to tell me what happened I’m going to have to do something drastic to get you to tell me the truth,” I said as I approached him, searching his features.
“There is nothing to tell.” His tone was cold and I wanted to shake him.
“You’re lying.” I studied him closer, looking up to him but he refused to back down or show any weakness.
I put my hands to my hips. My back still ached and my head was still pounding but I was so close to the truth, there was no way I could stop now.
“Who pushed me out of the way Damien?” I was not going to back down.
He was stone like, revealing nothing.
“There was only you and I.”
His features didn’t budge.
“Just tell me!,” I yelled, wanting the truth more than anything.
There was silence, he never said a word.
Frustrated, I threw my hands up in the air.
“I tried the easy way, you’ve left me now choice.” I headed out of the kitchen, I didn’t even check to see if he was following me because I knew he would.
Anger, and other various emotions built up inside me, smothering the pain. My only goal was the truth Damien refused to reveal.
I climbed the stairs two at a time and Damien was already at the top with his arms crossed watching me.
I moved straight passed him without missing a beat and headed into my room. Damien appeared inside my room but I ignored him. I had given him a chance to tell me the truth. The time for words and explanations were gone. It was time for action.
I unlocked my bedroom window and tried to push it open.
“What are you doing?” Damien, asked. There was an edge of tension in his voice.
It only propelled me forward. There was no changing my mind as I managed to open my window.
“What are you doing Tessa?” he repeated the question, more insistent this time. There was no hiding the emotion in his voice.
“I’m going to jump,” I said, matter factly as I climbed through the window on the roof.
“Stop this Tessa,” Damien implored but I was done.
I stood and faced him. He stood inside my bedroom facing me through the window.
“This is your last chance,” I stated. “Tell me the truth or I will jump.”
He pressed his lips together, his gaze momentarily calculating the height from where I stood to the ground. “You want the truth?”
I nodded. “I’m tired of you keeping things from me. It’s time to tell me everything.”
Seven years too late. Why had it taken so long? There was no point in worrying about the fact it had taken so long, all that mattered was the truth.
“Come inside Tessa,” he commanded, like I was actually going to do as he instructed. He had known me for seven years, surely he knew I would not back down if I believed in something.
I refused to move. Not until he was prepared to give me what I wanted. The truth.
The wind blew by hair across my face as I stared Damien down. “I want the truth Damien. All of it. Do you understand?
Our eyes held. He was annoyed but I was hopeful my stunt would be enough to push him.
“I’ll tell you everything.” There was resignation in his voice. He was going to tell me the truth.
Even though I didn’t trust him totally, I didn’t believe he would lie about this.
Beside I had a pretty good idea of what happened today, but it was pretty unbelievable and unexplainable. And that’s what I really needed from him.
I needed him to explain why it had happened. It didn’t fit in with who he was and what his task was.
“Everything?” I questioned, determined that he would tell me everything possible.
He nodded, reluctantly.
It did occur to me that I was trusting a demon, a creature that had no morals or sense of code. For all I knew he could lie his way out of this but I hoped I would be able to tell what was true and what was a lie.
I stepped to the window and Damien extended a hand to grab mine but I lost my footing. I tilted backward, my arms flailing and there was nothing to break my fall as I fell off the roof.
There was only a moment of thought where I believed I was going to die.
